So, I made a thing.
I’ve been meaning to host projects I’ve written on my own server, and it’s now available (and has been for a little while, but whatever). The tool I’ve made to do so is here, along with some of my rationale, but I figure I’ll talk about it a bit here.
The site itself exists for both practical and ideological reasons. On the practical side, I don’t have a particularly reliable network connection, so having hosting locally available is helpful.
Hm. Well. Been a while.
Remember how I said in my last post that it’d been a shitty few weeks? Yeah, that didn’t get any better. For a long time afterwards.
But I’m back! Hopefully for real, but who knows? The key, I think, is in the title of this post. Yup, that’s right, yak shaving. How is that the key, I (don’t) hear you ask? Well, I’d been having a lot of difficulty motivating myself to do anything, in part because the things I wanted to do (on those rare occassions where I wasn’t completely crippled) were “useless”.
Well, this is proving to be an impressively shitty few weeks for me. Today was no exception, and I honestly just don’t care right now. I said I’d post, but you know what? This counts.
On the bright side, I did finish up the auth framework for the writing project since the last time I did one of these, so there’s that. I’ll be hosting it as soon as I figure out apache’s proxy module and pick a name for the new section (truly the hardest part).
Because I have a lot on my mind and very little patience for this today, I’m gonna do a todo list for this domain:
change the site name (not domain name, that title at the top) get the code subdomain working get the reverse-proxy subdomain working (for projects with web APIs) host the yet-unnamed writing tool on that subdomain come up with a decent name for the reverse-proxy subdomain (the real hard part) make SSH access work (key only, jerkwads) before my next trip evaluate comment systems (and the possibility of DIY-ing something basic) figure out a better solution for the automatic blog building (or maybe a patch for hugo) minecraft subdomain, just for fun I’ll likely write at least one blog post about each as I do them (some warrant more), but while I’m at it here’s a few more upcoming technical things that I’m likely gonna blog about:
Today has been a long and annoying day, I’m starting this at 11:40pm, and I’m only doing it because I said I was gonna do post-a-day for a month, and goddammit I’m gonna follow through with it.
Other things I’m gonna follow through on, dammit:
fixing the site theme I stole adding the code subdomain posting the writing project (stupid auth framework compilcating my http wrapper) Now that that’s off of my chest, I should probably spend a few words talking about something interesting.
